Splish, Splash Splosh….. Painting guide for the Agalope

Painting guide for Carnevale Agalope

In a slight change from the normal this week I have put together a step by step guide to painting an Agalope from TTCombat’s Carnevale game. This guide has been intended to quickly allow you to get a model to the tabletop with little effort and is designed to maximise some of the existing paint tech out there for ease of use and effect. I have predominantly used GW paint but have provided a section at the end of the guide with some alternative paints. Note – If you swap out the GW contrast paints then you will need to thin the replacements for a similar effect.

Stage 1 – Undercoat with a white spray, I tend to find that Carnevale models (with the possible exception of the strigoi) benefit from a bright undercoat to better lift the vibrant colours that are prevalent in 18th century Venice. Once dry apply GW contrast Plaguebearer flesh over the whole model, the benefit of this paint is it pre thinned so can be applied directly from the pot and will give us a base colour and some pre-shading to work with.

Step 2 – Mix 1:1 Ogryn Camo with Deepkin Flesh. I used the ‘Air’ version of the Ogryn Camo as although it is designed for application by an airbrush it saves me the job of having to water down the mixture quite so much. Use this mixture to begin detailing the musculature on the model, focusing on the areas where light would naturally fall such as the tops of the shoulders, thighs and upper arms. I also very carefully add highlights to the face with this mixture.

Step 3 – Add White scar to the mixture in a ratio of 1:1 with the existing Deepkin flesh : Ogryn camo mix to apply the top highlights. Here it is useful to focus on the nose, bridge of the cheeks and any ridges on the brow.

Step 4 – For the model with the open mouth apply unthinned Voluptus pink to the inside of the mouth and lips

Step 5 – Apply unthinned Militarum green to the patches of scaly skin and fins and unthinned blood angels red for the underneath of the hands.

Step 6 – For the eyes I used a small dot of unthinned Shyish Purple. I purposely didn’t apply any white as I might with a human eye, mostly as I wanted to simulate a dilated pupil for low light environments (and those canals look pretty gloomy to me!)

Step 7 – Use thinned Zamesi desert (1:1 with water) to apply a base colour to the claws on both the feet and where applicable the hands. These can then be highlighted with some thinned White Scar applied to the tips of the claws. I used the same white to apply some highlights to the tips of the teeth in the open mouth.

Step 7 – To reinforce the aquatic nature of these miniatures I applied a thinned wash of 1:1:1 water, green wash and blue wash from Vallejo.

Step 8 – Basing is completed by a coat of Skavenblight dinge, a wash of Agrax earthshade and a final highlight of Celestra grey.
